Dear friend,

I ordered some dried lavender wreaths from Pottery Barn last week, and when the postman brought them to my door yesterday I was practically knocked over by the scent of the boxes, fully packaged and sealed. Can you think of anything in the whole wide world more delicious smelling than lavender?

It reminds me of my other life, the pretend one where I live on a lavender farm in Avignon.

It's the same one where I mostly wear linen dresses and eat homemade buckwheat pasta in chipped porcelain bowls, and barter with my neighbor who raises goats and makes fresh cheese and tells stories of questionable believability when he's had a glass or two of wine. That my husband made. From the other half of our farm, which is, conveniently, a vineyard.

In other, non-imaginary news, I hired an assistant! This, literally, is the most exciting thing that's happened to me since...I don't know...since I got married probably.  The truth is, I've been terribly overwhelmed with work lately. I have a waiting list for house portraits that's almost three hundred (!) folks long and I was starting to worry that I couldn't possibly get to everybody. And I really want to! So I met with this adorable girl who is a student at one of the local art schools, and she's going to help me this summer...ship and package orders, cut watercolor paper, edit files...I am so excited. Oh, and the best part? Her name is Ily, which is an acronym for "I Love You". Isn't that ADORABLE?

I am really hoping for a sweet summer...one filled with productive days, long and lazy evenings, and space to dream and breathe. I'm hoping that for all of us.

Love,

Rebekka

Emily,

Thank you so much for your prayers...that means the absolute world to me, seriously. Thank you. We haven't heard any news and I'm beginning to feel utterly hopeless. It's very hard! One day at a time :)

I have three big bushes of Lavender in my yard, and the buds are just starting to form, I make all kinds of goodies from them.

While visiting the south of France, I went to a lavender museum. You got to see the whole process of how they harvested the lavender, up in the hills, and also how they distilled them for the oil. The lavender that we have here, and the ones in your wreath, are Lavandine.
Fine lavender only grows in the arid regions of Provence, and are almost an indigo color. They also grow from seedlings, and the plants are very small, they are so beautiful, and it takes a long time to harvest these little plants. I brought some back, and I also bought some of the pure oil.

How lovely. I'm allergic to lavender, it's such a shame- there are beautiful lavender farms near my folks which are just wasted on me!

When we to Provence a couple of years ago (not far from Avignon),I had to mail some of the things I'd bought there home, as there was no way we could carry it all with us. Anyway, one of the items I shipped home was some amazing lavender & lavender oils I had picked up in one of outdoor markets there. When it came to the house, and I opened the box, the wonderfully strong scent of all that lavender took me right back to Provence in the loveliest 'scent memory' way. And the entire house smelled likes lavender field for days. Just thinking about makes me want to go back right this very minute -- sigh.
So glad your business is doing so well, and congrats on finding an assistant. And Ily is the sweetest name ever!
