FAQ

Sometimes folks ask me...

Q: What camera do you use?
A: I shoot with a Sony A65 DSLR, and I absolutely love it. I don't know how I got on the Sony track rather than the Canon or Nikon like most people I know, but this is my second Sony DSLR and I have really enjoyed both of them. I use the kit zoom lens as well as a 50 mm f/1.4. I just got a 35mm fixed lens too, and am using it a LOT.

Q: How do you edit your photos?
A: I use Photoshop CS5 for all my photo editing. Of course, I am nowhere near the level of a professional photographer, so I probably edit my photos the wrong/least efficient/most ridiculous way ever, but it's fun to play! Mainly I adjust brightness and contrast, add fill layers for haze and lightness, and sharpen certain areas. I recently purchased an action set from Amy Wenzel and have very much enjoyed playing with that.

Q: What kind of paint and paper do you work with?
A: Mostly I paint with gouache and watercolor (Windsor and Newton) on bright white, Arches hot press watercolor paper. Sometimes I paint directly on colored paper when I'm wanting a colored background. My brush is very tiny!

Q: Where do you have your prints made?
A: Actually, I print them at home. About a year ago, I invested in a wonderful professional grade photo printer (made by HP), and I print all my work on Hahnemuhle William Turner watercolor paper, which is mould-made and has a gorgeous, tactile texture.

Q: I'm planning a trip to Nashville. Do you have a studio I can visit?
A: I wish! Just kidding, I don't wish. I really love working from home. My studio is a 10" x 10" room that's connected to our bedroom. Most days I wake up very early, make a hot press of coffee and work in my pajamas for much of the morning. Okay, much of the whole day!

Q: Can you help me with my blog/art business/Etsy store?
A: I get a lot of emails asking for help with this sort of thing and I am so flattered! However, (regretfully) I won't be able to respond to all of them individually. I only have a certain number of work hours in the day, and I need to spend most of them painting! But I will try to respond the the most frequent ones here :)

Q: How do I get a house portrait painted by you?
A: Because of the overwhelming demand I've received (thank you!!!), I am so sorry to say that I am no longer taking orders or adding names to my wait list until further notice. I hope to be able to open up more space for these in the future, but right now I need to concentrate on working my way through the long wait list I have now :)
